Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR/RCR)

Yale University is committed to the conduct of research and research training activities in a scientifically responsible and ethical manner. The Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR/RCR) training is a part of funding requirements for both the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH*).

The NSF requires training in RECR of all faculty and senior personnel (for new proposals submitted on or after July 31, 2023), post-doctoral researchers, graduate, and undergraduate students supported by NSF funding in the form of support from salary and/or stipends to conduct research. NOTE: It is the Principal Investigators (PIs) responsibility to ensure the specific individuals that receive funding on an NSF award successfully complete the required RECR training assigned to them.

The appropriate NSF RECR training is assigned to each individual in Yale’s new Learning Management System, Workday Learning. The training requirement is visible on each individual’s Workday Learning homepage. The specific training requirement assigned must be successfully completed to satisfy the requirement. Training is dictated by funding source and an individual’s title/grade. Follow the instructions of your assigned Workday Learning Program to ensure timely credit for successful completion. Access the Workday Learning training guide for more information.

RCR / RECR Standards and Resources

In support of Yale’s commitment to ethically responsible research, the University subscribes to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Research Integrity (ORI) guidance on what are considered to be essential elements of an appropriate Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR/RCR) Program.

Other Federal granting agencies as well as many non-federal sponsors have adopted similar standards.
